Always wanted to go to Moscow since learning a bit about it at school in '89. I started overland from Prague and eventually got there via Poland, Estonia and St Petersburg.
The good thing was it was the middle of winter and no tourists and exactly the -25C conditions I hadn't experienced before. Cameras aswell as bodies seem to suffer after 4-5 hours being outside. Nice industrial enviroment up at the North Sea port.
Make sure you understand enough cyrillic before you get to the border so you can fill in your arrival card in russian (ie even what your name looks like).
Did the classic trans-siberian (good in winter - horrible in summer i heard) and got to beijing just in time for Chinese New Year, 4 days of continious explosions and booming, biking around and checking out the Olympic venues I had modelled and rendered some 3 years before. Laos, Thailand and Malaysia followed.
